Tiki Alien

A continuation of my tiki monsters series.

When someone suggested this character I wasn’t really sure how I was going to do it, but I enjoy the way that some of the tiki elements worked so naturally.

Sketchy

Recently I have been playing with a looser drawing style on photoshop, doing the entire drawing digitally rather than sketching it out on paper, than “inking” it on the computer.  I like it!  It allows me to play with the lines like I used to do with charcoal and a good eraser.  Since I was going back to my roots, I decided it would be fun to do some biology related stuff as well (considering that’s what I have my university degree in).

I got the reference for this drawing from a stock image page on deviantart - http://siberianclover-stock.deviantart.com/art/Bear-Smile-93220046

I felt inclined to draw a bear, because at the time I was being pestered by a black bear up at my parents’ house.  It was coming down from the hills to get into the garbage, and just about every night I would go out and try to scare it away.  Eventually the bear lost its fear of me so there were a couple of hair raising experiences.  One night I was peering through the window on the front door and the bear was standing directly in front of me pushing in from the other side.  Needless to say, that gave me a start.

My nemesis.

And I got the references for these from yet another stock image page on deviantart - http://rgstock777.deviantart.com/

The top skull is a wolverine, and the bottom skull is an otter.  Who knew that otters had such gnarly looking chompers?

Tiki Gremlin

Another circa 1980s critter tikified.  This time it is Stripe from the movie Gremlins.  His little mohawk seemed like it would be funny to turn into a tiki type of element.

There are definitely more 80s monsters in the works!

There are aspects of this one that I enjoy, but I think I fell a bit short of making him truly tiki.  I think it’s the ears.

Martian Immigration

The Sesame Street Martians trying to apply for a green card.

I guess they are supposed to be saying, “yip yip yip” but forever I thought they were saying, “yup yup yup”.   I’m just going continue to ignore reality for now though, cause it makes more sense to me as “yup”.

If you don’t remember these guys, check it out!

Leonardo

The first of the fearsome fighting foursome.

I definitely wanted to go for more of a literal turtle look when I redesigned the Leo, Donny, Raph and Mikey.  I’ve noticed so many fanarts nowadays (as cool as some of them are) barely even resemble a turtle.  I like the idea of the TMNT appearing to be slow and sort of chunky.  Then it makes it all the more shocking when they lay down an ass beating.

Although, I have to say, even the original designs sort of left me cold.  They always resembled green earless Cabbage Patch Kids to me.
